Baron Morgan's Scriptorium
Scribal art in the Society for Creative Anachronism is a working craft rather than a display one: the scrolls made are given as awards at events, so they are produced to a deadline, in quantity, and to standards a kingdom sets down. This page is a scribe's resource and philosophy site, written while its author served as deputy to the officer who oversees that work in one of the society's kingdoms.
What it covers is what a new scribe actually struggles with. The philosophy section argues for choosing a period exemplar and following it rather than inventing a house style. The office pages explain how award scrolls are commissioned, assigned and returned, and what the signet office needs from a scribe to keep a kingdom's backlog moving — the backlog being the standing gap between awards given and scrolls delivered, which every kingdom has and every signet tries to shrink. Separate pages collect illumination technique, references, a gallery of finished work and links to the household and library the author kept.
The author hoped to put the kingdom's standards book online, which is still the thing a beginner most wants. The page is kept as it was published on this domain; current officers, standards and contacts are published by the society and its kingdoms themselves.

Welcome to Baron Morgan's Scriptorium! I am currently the Deputy for the Tyger Clerk of the Signet, Duchess Katherine Stanhope. Here you will find some information on the Scribal Arts as practised in the Society for Creative Anachronism and most especially in the Kingdom of the East.
