Local Nature Hikes to do This Spring

High Falls Trail

High Falls Trail

Warmer weather, flowers blooming, that anxious energy to get outside—these are all signs that spring is here and with it comes the thought of where to go?  This time of year is great to get outside and walk a nature trail.  Bring the family or invite a friend!  There are tons of possibilities for where to go.  Here are two state parks that are nearby and offer a fun outing with the kids.

Panola Mountain State Park—There are two easy trails to a 100-acre granite outcrop and rare ecosystem.  The 0.75 mile outcrop trail brings you to the granite outcrop that is typical of what you would see in the Piedmont Region of Georgia.  Watch for spring flowers as you walk along the outcrop!  This is a great hike to view evidence of geological activity and the effects of erosion.  The 1.25 mile watershed trail shows the drainage area and describes water conservation and the watershed—a perfect hike for Earth Day!  The park is part of the Arabia Mountain Natural Heritage Area and is located on Hwy 155 in Stockbridge, Georgia.  A fee or valid park pass are required to enter the park.

High Falls State Park—Located along High Falls Road in Jackson, Georgia, the park is known for its tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River.  The 2.2 mile High Falls Trail is a moderate loop hike that goes down steps to view the cascades and then loops through the forest.  See if you can identify the flowering trees and spring flowers as you walk in the forest.  There is a parking fee or valid park pass is required since it is a state park. And bring the dog!
