I recently was introduced to the exciting music of Grassville, a local Bluegrass band. My daughter Jessica and I were having “date night” and decided to have dinner at the Mystic Grill on the Square in Covington. (Our food was great, as it has always been there, but I’ll save that for a later restaurant report because I want to talk about music). We chose to be seated in the rooftop dining area where we were greeted by the best live Bluegrass music I have ever heard.
Grassville is comprised of five young men who were all born into musical families and live right here in the Covington area. Each respective member of the band meshes his own stylistic tastes into a sound which is not common in today’s bluegrass music making it appealing to a broader audience. Vocally, the three voices of Jake Hegwood, John Nipper and Brian Stephens provide a tight crisp harmony equally as pleasing on a wide open driving tune as it is on a lonesome mournful ballad. The band members range from teenage banjo prodigy Aaron Clegg to award winning multi-instrumentalist Brian Stephens and fiddle virtuoso John Rice. Grassville has become an acoustic force to behold and is already receiving national airplay on their newly released CD “Lonely Tonight”.
Their songs range from instrumentals to slow ballads to humor. My favorite song is “The Raid” about the time when the revenuers came to raid Daddy’s moonshine still. I keep their CD in my car and listen to it whenever I want to feel good and smile. The band will be part of this year’s Fourth of July Celebration in Downtown Covington. You owe it to yourself to come enjoy their music.
