Nate Stykes 911_Red Cross RecogNate Stykes, a communications officer for the Covington-Newton County Communications Center, was recently recognized by The American Red Cross for successfully organizing multiple blood drives. Organizing 13 drives over a three year period, Stykes first got the idea after learning of a tragedy in our region.

“I started doing blood drives after hearing about one of the 2013 floods in Louisiana,” Stykes said. “I contacted the Red Cross and asked for information on the procedure to conduct a blood drive. “I then then contacted Covington – Newton County 911 director Mike Smith about making it a joint effort with the 911 center, myself and the Red Cross.”

Smith was excited about the idea and appreciates having someone like the caliber of Stykes working for him and his efforts.

“Nate takes tremendous pride in his position here at the 911 Center and enjoys giving back to the community he serves,” Smith said. “Nate steps up quite often to help out in the community with blood drives and other community events. I’m proud to have someone like Nate on staff who is not afraid to give his all to the job and the community.”

In addition to saving lives, Stykes pointed out an added benefit of organizing blood drives is building relationships.

“I really enjoy being able to coordinate these events and get out and meet some of the public on the day of the drives,” Stykes said. “There are many wonderful, generous people in the City of Covington and Newton County and it is a pleasure to get to know them.”

While Stykes is appreciative of the recognition The Red Cross bestowed upon him, he is also quick to remind people to visit http://www.redcross.org/give-blood to learn about upcoming drives.
