We are less than a month to football and our boys in Athens are working their butts off to get ready for the season. It is often said that this is the time of year where championships are won. I am not a true believer in that propaganda. I think you have a better chance to lose one during summer and summer camp than win one.
Why? During summer break the boys are on their own. No supervision. And boys being boys and we are talking around 100 18-22 year olds, some will get in trouble. When camp opens the lack of supervision issue goes away. The guy’s time is pretty much scheduled. Where I get worried is summer camp itself. Full contact and the injuries that come with it are a big concern.
A promising season can be upset in a flash. A couple injuries to guys who play the same position, say DB, turn an iffy position with no experienced depth into a nightmare scenario. How about Running back and remember we lost 3 to injuries last year. The QB position, now that one makes me cringe. We have 2 scholarship QB’s on campus that have gone thru summer practice. Lose one and we are a high ankle sprain from our starting QB having to introduce himself in the huddle. That’s why football coaches go bald.
