Taylor Boyd, a sixth grader at Piedmont Academy, suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), commonly known as brittle bone syndrome. Over the course of his young life, Taylor has broken 20-25 long bones and has been in terrible pain. Although he displayed all the symptoms, Taylor’s blood work did not show the genetic mutation for the disease. Therefore, doctors at Canada Shriner’s Hospital classified his condition as an un-typed form of OI and began intravenous treatment in 2011. Every year during April and October until his bones stop growing, Taylor will visit Montreal and receive valuable medical treatment.

His classmates wanted to express their appreciation to Shriner’s Hospital for helping their classmate. After some brainstorming, they performed various “tasks” for family, friends, and neighbors and successfully raised a notable cash donation. Sixth grade students, including Taylor, are pictured below with their homeroom teachers, Mr. Cameron Vaughn and Ms. Elizabeth Davis.
