Unity East of Atlanta, with its grant writing team, was pleased to host the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Celebration of its first Little Free Library, Charter #44431, on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Located at 933 Commercial Street, it is the first Little Free Library in Conyers.
Many adults and children alike enjoyed refreshments, music and balloons, and were introduced to the newest reading oasis for our community’s children.
Besides the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, everyone was treated to a short introduction of the Little Free Library concept of “Take a Book Leave a Book”, or “Keep a Book” and other interesting facts.
Here are some of the facts:
Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. These small community book exchanges number 36,000 around the world in 70 countries. Today our Little Free Library at Unity East of Atlanta joins the movement to share books, bring people together and create a community of readers.
The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, The National Book Foundation and the American Library Association. Reader’s Digest named them as one of the “50 Things We Love About America”. Each year nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries.
Our Little Free Library doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the entire community. It’s our hope that this Little Free Library will bring much love, joy, more connection and a whole lot more books to our community.
Unity of East Atlanta welcomes the donation of new or gently used children’s books.
