Time of Sacrifice

Expert Advice Pets

We are entering the Lenten and Easter season. This is a very important time for the Catholic and some Protestant faiths. This is a period associated with sacrifice.

Many people will remember giving up chocolate or sweet tea for 40 days. However, many people are looking to add to their lives during this period. They are changing habits or adding service projects to their period of preparation for Easter.

animal shelter rescueI want you to consider this, especially as it relates to our animal friends. During the time from Ash Wednesday on March 1st to Easter Sunday on April 16th, consider donating your time or gifts to some of the local rescues, animal shelters, or even to a needy neighbor or friend. In this area alone, there are many needy charities that deal with animals.

We have all seen the groups adopting animals at the local pet store or at the local festival. They are always in need of sheets, blankets, food, and most importantly, time. They can usually find a place for you to help. Whenever you are in town on the weekend, stop and ask what you can do to help.

Many of my clients are aware of the charity that donates first aid kits to police dogs. We forget that these hard-working officers also need equipment. They are placed in dangerous situations and there are times when they need first aid from their human partner. We Ride To Provide donates these first aid kits to the canine officers and their partners. Every Christmas, clinics such as Animal Medical of Covington have Santa pose for pictures with our beautiful pets, and some of the owners. The money is then donated to provide these first aid kits. It would be a great gift for them if this generosity extended all year.

We all know generosity starts at home. If donating your time or money to an organization is unfamiliar to you, then consider a person you know that is struggling with caring for their pet. You can offer to pay for the annual vaccines, flea medicine, or even a spa day for the pet. The owner probably would not turn down one either, if you are so inclined. Giving to a person that means something to you can be very rewarding, and it is something they will never forget. I always feel great when I can help a friend or family member that is not expecting any assistance. They know that your aid comes from love, not guilt.

Lastly, my priest always likes to remind us that all our deeds during the Lenten season can continue the entire year. These groups and our friends and family are caring for animals all year. Think about their sacrifice or need and consider helping in any way you can. The person you help will be appreciative, but so will the animal. You will see a true thanks and unconditional love. Remember, our animals have a way to express their thanks in a way that can light up a room. I hope everyone finds a worthy cause during this time and has a wonderful Easter.
