Welcome back to the Dawg House. I hope you had a wonderful start to summer with a Great Memorial Day. As you read this the spring collegiate sport season has come to an end. But as I write this we have a few more meets/tourneys/games to play.
Our ladies’ softball team earned a 14th seed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are hosting a regional in Athens. The men’s golf team is led by Lee McCoy and Lee has set a school record by winning three straight tournaments this year and four overall. The golf team play in a regional in Florida and then on to the NCAA in California in early June.
Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams are taking aim at the NCAA also. After destroying the competition in the regionals our tennis teams are headed to Waco. The men are coming off their 28th Southeastern Conference (SEC) title, made 21 NCAA semifinal appearances, and won six national titles. (Have I ever tell you the story when John McEnroe, yea that one, played in the NCAA’s in Athens? Maybe next month.)
The 6th seeded Women arrive in Waco, Texas for the NCAA-young, experienced, talented, and hungry. Their senior Lauren Herring is a four-time All-SEC and All-American selection, 5th ranked singles player, 11th ranked doubles player, and leading the way. Five freshmen are playing and playing well. These ladies plan on making a statement. Let’s wish them well as they represent our University of Georgia.
GOOOO…..DAWGS!
I had the pleasure of playing golf with an old friend last month. Bobby Cremins was the celebrity in my foursome at the Jimmy Rane Foundation Golf Tournament. I use the term “friend” loosely but I have met Coach Cremins several times through the years, played golf with him before, and helped out with one of his camps when I was a student at Tech. He even remembered me!
It was great to hear his stories of other coaches, his former players, and the state of college basketball in general. Bobby will always be one of my heros. It was his basketball team with Mark Price and John Salley that made me fall in love with Tech sports and develop into the die hard fan I am today.
He was the coach back when Tech made the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament and competed for Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championships every year. He now lives in Hilton Head and is quite a golfer.
Speaking of golf, after winning the ACC tournament the Yellow Jacket golf team closed -9 through the final 6 holes to beat University of Georgia, advance through the regionals, and make it into the finals of the NCAA tournament.
Go Jackets! We run this State!
