This last week I was able to play in the Jimmy Rane foundation golf tournament. The foundation gives scholarships to deserving students headed to college. If you don’t recognize the name, Jimmy is the Yellow Fella on the Great Southern Wood commercials. Jimmy is the owner of Great Southern Wood and a former Auburn University football player and a great guy.
What is unique about the tournament is a lot of current and former coaches from around the south and many former college and NFL players participate. I was told because of NCAA rules some of the current coaches might not be able to attend like that have for many many years. This is just another example of the joke that is the NCAA.
The tournament was held at the Capital Club in Montgomery, which is part of the Robert Trent Jones golf trail. If you love golf this is a great place to go play with three championship level courses.
The strong golf tradition at Ga Tech is carrying on. Anders Albertson won the ACC tournament last week and right now the team is battling to make the NCAA final that is being held at the Crabapple Course of the Capital City Club in Atlanta. Tech had 7 former golfers at The Players championship last week including last year’s champion, Matt Kucher. I can’t imagine there is another college with as many current players on the PGA tour.
