Shelli Says…Turn Your Radio On

radioThe thing I love most about my job would be the people I meet, the great people I have an opportunity to work with, and the opportunity I have to work in the community I live in and love. The days that seem to go wrong can always change to right with a good attitude and the chance to be around fun and creative people.

Case in point. We at the Conyers Rockdale Council for the Arts, CRCA, are planning our largest program of the year. The event will be held at the Olde Town Pavilion June 6. The group playing will be A1A, the original Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band. It is going to be a night of fun, music, dancing, and a pavilion full of Parrot Heads. So come join us.

The best part of this event for me has been working with a great team of volunteers, all of which have taken on this task with great heart and enthusiasm. No event or program is ever done without dedicated workers.  And frankly I have the best.  Everyone brings such talent and eagerness to the project that I am completely overwhelmed and honored to be working with each and every one.

So yesterday I had the pleasure to meet a neat person. His name is DJ Scottie.  Yes, he is an honest to goodness DJ and just how cool is that? So it got me to thinking about radio and how radio has changed. Yes, I watched the Walton’s and saw where every night the family gathered around the radio to listen to music and shows. The radio was the size of a 32-inch television.  They all looked at it…that always made me laugh what were they waiting on? Someone to pop out? If that happened grandma would have lost her teeth and John Boy would have run so far he would have gotten lost on the mountain. I digress.

The changes in radio are interesting. When they first started putting them in cars that was innovative for the time. Remember when all we had was AM radio? Wow! Here in Atlanta we had WSB and another station if the weather was clear. Then FM. Holy cow, big time! And all the choices–man you talk big time.

I grew up with the radio. I always had one in my room along with a top notch record player, never a TV. There is just something special about radio. Even now we have all the choices in music listening–Pandora, Satellite, I Heart Radio, and web based like my friend DJ Scottie has. But nothing beats good ole local station FM music, news radio, and the dreaded traffic report. I hope we never lose it; what a shame that would be.

I miss the great radio personalities…Captain Herb, Ludlow Porch, and so many others. They would always have something good and kind to say while making our time in the car or in the kitchen a bit more pleasant. As different as radio has become it is still one of the best inventions of our time.

As for my new friend DJ Scottie, y’all listen out for him on Just 4 Fun radio. Not only will you hear music but you might hear and learn something really cool about our hometown.
