On April 20, 2016, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced they awarded 31 contracts for statewide construction projects totaling over $146.6 million. These projects were advertised for bids in March and awarded on April 1.
“I am proud to say that two of these contracts were awarded for our local community in Senate District 43,” said Senator Van Ness. “These contracts are critical to improving the safety of citizens in Newton County by addressing much needed intersection improvements. I will continue working with the GDOT and local officials to ensure infrastructure funding opportunities to the district.”
Projects that address safety include:
Intersection improvements on SR 36 at Flat Shoals/Steele Rd and at Henderson Mill Rd totaling around $1.9 million. The anticipated completion date for this project is 8/31/2017.
2.5 miles of milling, inlay and plant mix resurfacing on US 278/SR 12 beginning at I-20/SR 402 and extending to Industrial Drive totaling around $1.2 million. The anticipated completion date for this project is 2/28/2017.
Also, earlier this year, DeKalb County was awarded a contract as well. In DeKalb County, operational improvements will be made on SR 12 (Covington Hwy) at Lithonia Industrial Blvd. Total funding for this contract award is $423,630 and the anticipated completion date is 11/30/2016.

In addition to awarded projects, last week GDOT announced upgrades to the www.GAroads.org webpage to help contractors qualify for Routine Maintenance Contracting opportunities as a result of the Transportation Funding Act of 2015. The webpage offers guidance for the Routine Maintenance contractor qualification process, including the Routine Maintenance Prequalification guide; becoming qualified; registering as a bidder; submitting a bid; tutorials; FAQs and more.
