The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners will receive $100,000 in grant funding from the Recreation Trails Program. The program is administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources under the guidance of the Federal Highway Administration.
Rockdale County was one of 14 agencies in Georgia to be awarded funding in this grant cycle.
The grant requires an 80/20 match. The 2011 SPLOST, the International Mountain Bicycling Association, the Conyers-Rockdale Bike & Trail Coalition, and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association Atlanta all contributed to the match of $65,878 for a total project cost of $165,878.
Funds will be used to contract for services to build 6.35 miles of shared use trails for mountain biking, hiking, and walking within South Rockdale Community Park, located at 3909 East Fairview Road in Stockbridge. The trail will connect to the Arabian Mountain Path System Trail greenway corridor. The corridor extends for over 30 miles passing many landmarks and several schools. The trail connects the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Rockdale County to the Stonecrest Mall in DeKalb County and it is within The Arabian Mountain National Heritage Area.
This trail recreation project will be a collaboration with the International Mountain Bicycling Association and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association.
