Pancreatic Cancer Project to be Presented at Japan Super Science Fair

Education eMetro News Featured Rockdale

sendCarolinetoJapanCaroline Norwood, a junior at the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, was recently chosen to present her research on pancreatic cancer at the Japan Super Science High School Fair. This is a really exciting opportunity for her to share this important research with the world. The science fair will take place in Japan from August 7th through 13th.

Last summer Miss Norwood worked at the University of Georgia researching a better way to diagnose pancreatic cancer. She wanted to study pancreatic cancer because her mom was diagnosed with it in 2008. Her mother has been cured, but that is not the reality for many others diagnosed with this disease. Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States with just an 8% five year survival rate. Miss Norwood’s research aimed to find a quicker and easier way to diagnose it since late detection is one of the main causes of its deadliness.

sendCarolinetoJapan-projectMiss Norwood is now figuring out how to get to Japan for the science fair and needs to raise approximately $2,500 by June 1st and approximately $3,000 before August 1st. Even though she will be working as a lifeguard, she is not quite sure if she will be able to meet her savings’ goal. She has set up a GoFundMe in an effort to raise money for the trip (https://gofundme.com/sendcarotojapan ). Any donation is greatly appreciated!
