Public Invited to Enjoy New Playground Equipment and Renovated Fishing Pier at Cornish Creek Reservoir this Summer
Newton County invites the public to come out and enjoy the warm weather this summer and use the newly-installed playground equipment and renovated fishing pier at the Cornish Creek Reservoir at Lake Varner Park, 11905 Alcovy Road in Covington.
“We are truly proud of the work that’s been done to develop these amenities for the entire community,” Special Projects Coordinator Cheryl Delk said. “Our citizens are sure to enjoy the new playground and renovated fishing pier overlooking the reservoir.”
Completed in October 2015, the total cost of the 8-week project was $95,000. The project was funded by the Newton County Water Resources Division and in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources through a $40,000 Land and Water Conservation Grant.
The new playground area, which overlooks the 850-acre Lake Varner, has an aquatic theme and features kid-safe mulch, a fish climber, multiple slides, a small climbing wall, climbing poles, bridges, a bumper ladder and new swings. The County designed the playground area specifically for youth ages 5-12 with the exception of the toddler swings.
Additional activities available to citizens and non-county residents at Lake Varner Park include fishing, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, bird watching and hiking.
Admission to the park is free for citizens of Newton and Walton counties. There is a $5 vehicle fee and $5 boat fee for citizens who live in other counties. Hours of operation are April – October, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. and November – March, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Visitors can bring their boats for a $5 fee.
