NCSS Students Win Awards at Griffin RESA 2016 Regional Literacy Days Competition

Newton County School System students brought home several awards from the recent Griffin RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency) 2016 Regional Literacy Days Poetry Recitation, Ready Writing, and Drama Competition.

8th Grade Poetry Recitation Contest

In the poetry recitation contests, competitors were judged on a number of criteria, including stage presence, articulation, interpretation, memory and accuracy, and difficulty of the piece.

Alainah Jackson of Heard-Mixon Elementary School won first place in the third-grade recitation contest with her performance of, “Roald Dahl Poems.” In the middle school competition, Christian Fredrick of Liberty Middle School took home third place honors in the eighth-grade contest with his performance of the poem, “Life is a Privilege.”

6th Grade Ready Writing Contest

Newton County School System students also earned awards in the Ready Writing Competition during which students are given a writing prompt and one hour to complete an essay. In the elementary division, Caleb Ekanem from the Newton County Theme School won third place in the fourth grade competition. Fellow Newton County Theme School student Morgan Fannin competed in the middle school contest and she brought home the first place award in the sixth grade Ready Writing Competition.

 

DRAMA COMPETITION

Drama Competition

In addition to the Poetry Recitation and Ready Writing Contest, Newton County School System’s drama team from Veterans Memorial Middle School placed third with their performance of, “In Real Life.” Team members include: Jeffrey Lowe, Nia Ambroise, Rafael Soria, and Abriella Farino.

“The Literacy Days Competition provides students with the opportunity to perform and be recognized for their talents through the celebration of the arts,” said Samantha Fuhrey, Superintendent of Newton County Schools. “I am proud of our winners as it takes a tremendous amount of talent and commitment to participate in this type of competition. They represented their schools and our school system very well at the regional competition and we are very proud of them.”
