NCSS Book Bus Ready to Hit the Road

NCSS Book BusThe Newton County School System (NCSS) Book Bus has been restocked and will hit the road next week to deliver free books for the summer to children in the local community. The NCSS Book Bus will visit the following locations:

Date LOCATION ARRIVAL TIME
Tuesday, May 31, 2016 City of Porterdale Historic Gym 11:00 AM
Nelson Heights Community Center Noon
Jamestown Community 1:00 PM
Wednesday, June 1, 2016 City of Covington Housing Authority 11:00 AM
Washington Street Community Center Noon
Thursday, June 2, 2016 Riverside Estates Clubhouse 11:00 AM
The Enclave at Gross Lake (Pavilion) Noon

The NCSS Book Bus provided over 4,000 books to young children and teenagers in the Newton County community in just two outing in 2015 and the goal is to provide even more books this year.

“The ability to read is fundamental to a child’s success in school,” said NCSS Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey. “There is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. In addition, reading is fundamental to function in today’s society and it is a vital skill in finding a good job. And of course, reading is fun! We want to promote the love of reading and encourage our students to pick up a good book whenever they can.”

According to Shannon Buff, NCSS Director of Secondary Education, the Book Bus is stocked with a wide variety of books for children from infant to young adult.

“There’s something for everyone,” said Buff. “We have books for toddlers learning their first words to story books for elementary kids and chapter books and novels for the older students.”

She added, “We encourage students to read during the break because research shows that children who do not read in the summer lose two to three months of reading development. The Book Bus offers students a great opportunity to stock up with many exciting books that they don’t have to pay for and never have to return. It’s a great way to build their own personal library.”
