Little Hats Raise Awareness for Heart Disease and Congenital Heart Defects

To help raise awareness of congenital heart disease, which affects more than 40,000 newborns each year in the United States, all babies born at Piedmont Newton Hospital in February will receive a locally knitted or crocheted red baby hat with a family kit that provides resources and educational material.

“Eight in 1,000 babies are born with a heart defect. We thank MiMedx and Piedmont for joining us in this critical outreach to give families the knowledge and resources to understand this important issue,” Metro Atlanta American Heart Association executive director Joy Holmes said. “We also thank the many volunteers across the city who are hand knitting these little hats as small tokens of support.”

Little Hats, Big Hearts began in Chicago in 2014. The project has grown to include 460 hospitals in 40 states.
