Isakson Encourages Road Safety on “Drive Safer Sunday”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is encouraging motorists to “Drive Safer Sunday,” as his Senate resolution urging drivers to drive safely during the holiday season passed unanimously this week. The resolution designates Sunday, November 29, 2015, as “Drive Safer Sunday” and is designed to bring attention to the fact that the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest highway traffic day of the year.

Isakson has introduced and passed this resolution for several years, and he was joined this time by U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del.

“For many years now, I have been proud to offer this important resolution,” said Senator Isakson. “It is my hope that as this awareness spreads that it will help drivers think twice when they are on the roads this holiday season and prevent a tragic accident from occurring.”

The “Drive Safer Sunday” resolution encourages motorists, trucking firms and law enforcement agencies to work together to make the roads safer for all travelers during the holidays and throughout the year as the high volume of vehicles on America’s highways and interstates increases the risk for dangerous or fatal accidents.

In addition to the increased volume of personal vehicles on roadways, large truck volume increases during the season, as well. Isakson has urged the Obama administration to act expeditiously to adopt a long-overdue and much-needed safety measure that would require large trucks to have speed limit devices to cap maximum speeds.

Isakson has introduced similar resolutions in previous years in honor of Cullum Owings, a Georgia college student who died in 2002 in a traffic accident on his way back to school after Thanksgiving. Steve and Susan Owings of Atlanta, the parents of Cullum Owings, founded an organization called Road Safe America in honor of their son to bring awareness of the hazards of highway travel and provide statistics and safety tips to drivers. Road Safe America’s goals include better driver training for all drivers and limiting the top speed for large trucks.
