The Rockdale County Autism Support Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is hosting the 2nd annual iCan Shine Bike Camp at Rockdale County High School from July 6-10, 2015.
Last year, 26 riders and more than 40 volunteers participated in the Conyers program. iCan Shine is a safe, proven method to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle and become lifelong, independent riders. Bike riding provides individuals the ability to have a more active lifestyle and feel included while promoting health and wellness.
We still need volunteers for the bike camp to work with the riders especially for the afternoon sessions. No experience is necessary to volunteer. There will be an orientation/training on Sunday, July 5th at 5:00pm at Rockdale County High School.
The session times Monday-Friday are:
Session 1: 8:30 – 9:45am
Session 2: 10:05 – 11:20am
Session 3: 11:40am – 12:55pm
Session 4: 2:00 – 3:15pm
Session 5: 3:35 – 4:50pm
Volunteers may choose to volunteer for as many sessions as their schedule can accommodate; however, we ask that they attend the same time each day because they will be paired with the same rider each day.
This is a very rewarding opportunity to volunteer and help individuals with special needs. Please contact Esther Maclin with any questions – 770-633-5007
iCan Shine (formerly, Lose The Training Wheels) is a national charitable nonprofit organization. We collaborate with local organizations and individuals, we refer to as our program ‘hosts’, to conduct over 100 five-day iCan Bike programs in 32 States and 3 Provinces in Canada serving nearly 3,000 people with disabilities each year.
Our organization began in 2007 and, since then, we have successfully taught approximately 20,000 people with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. The impact of learning to ride a bicycle independently, and our high level of success in helping people with disabilities accomplish this feat, continues to drive demand for our programs and fuel our growth.
Approximately 80% of the people who participate in our iCan Bike program ride a two-wheel bicycle independently (at least 75 feet with no assistance) by the end of our five-day program while attending for only 75 minutes each day! The remaining 20% make tremendous progress towards this goal and leave our programs accompanied by parents and/or siblings trained as ‘spotters’ to pick up where we leave off!
