Golf in the Summer – It’s Just Too Darn Hot

golf courseI love the game of golf but if you insist on playing golf in the summer you have one of two issues. One is you are retired and have absolutely nothing better to do (Mr. Jim). Or two, you have friends that love to gamble and you just can’t afford not to play with them (name anonymous). I don’t want to take any chances on losing my fish, I mean my friend.

I’ll let you guess which one I fit in.

I am sure either one will not read this article so I’m comfortable giving the following advice. I see it all the time. You’ve got a perfect par 3 yardage to a huge green. However, the pin’s up front, over a pond or a deep bunker. Using your range finder you get an exact yardage. 151 perfect 7 iron (shut up Dan). But just when you need a solid shrike you miss it a little. You watch in agony as your ball splashes in the water or disappears in sand.

First, if you always think 7 iron from 150, you probably carry it 145 and it rolls another five yards. Those five yards can be huge when you have to fly something. Most golfers fail to factor in bounce and roll when they determine yardage to the pin. Do yourself a favor on all carry shots, add five yards to your actual distance?

Second thing: When you’re facing an intimidating shot realize what it’s doing to you. Now is not the time to firm your grip. Do the opposite. Relax your body, especially your hands, arms and shoulders. This will allow a further and larger turn, a free swing, and better contact. In addition, forget about that front pin placement. Would you rather have a 25-foot putt from the middle of the green or be in the hazard?

Hope these couple of tips help.

Till next tee time.

P.S. Dad, how long are you going to use this hernia surgery to keep you from coming out and getting your whooping?
