Georgia United Credit Union completed their “mini-makeover” at Norcross Elementary School’s playground this week as part of their 3rd annual School Crashers school improvement program. Norcross Elementary was nominated by ESOL Teacher, Angela Turner, earlier this spring and the school was selected from among hundreds of entries to receive a $10,000+ playground improvement grant. The school received a 10-station Playworx fitness and agility course playground, portable soccer goals and painted hardscape games during August.
Ms. Turner said, “We are always looking for ways to enhance the lives of our students and families in our area, so when I saw the School Crashers announcement to nominate a deserving school for a makeover, I know we had to nominate Norcross Elementary. Georgia United worked directly with our contacts at Gwinnett County School System over the summer to ensure that their donated fitness and agility course was properly installed into a protected grassy area – and now we have a brand new playground area for our students to enjoy. They also provided a painted hardscape game area and portable soccer goals for our existing playground.”
Norcross Elementary is located at 150 Hunt Street in Norcross and was one of five runner-up grant recipient schools selected from hundreds of entries this spring. Principal Dr. Kassia Morris-Sutton worked with both Georgia United and Gwinnett County School System facilities over the summer to coordinate School Crasher improvements for completion by Labor Day.
Other Schools Receiving School Crashers Makeover Grants were:
- Oakcliff Elementary in Doraville – received the top prize of a complete campus makeover on July 22 and 23, including interior and exterior paint, new cafeteria tables and seating, numerous custom wall murals, landscaping, playground improvements and more.
- Tunnel Hill Elementary in Whitfield County – received a media center makeover – including new carpet from Mohawk and 25 Chromebook laptops, plus 30 volunteers for a school beautification day.
