Television and radio signals at these frequencies are supposed to stop at the horizon, and the hobby documented on this page exists because sometimes they do not. Warm air layered over cool air bends a signal along the ground for hundreds of miles; the ionised trail of a meteor reflects one for a moment; in the right part of the solar cycle an upper layer of the ionosphere returns a signal from another continent. Listeners who chase those openings call it distance listening, and they keep logs, recordings and photographs as proof.

What a page like this offers a beginner is orientation.
