Does your child get bored during week-long school breaks? If so, the Alcovy and Eastside High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) have joined forces to provide you with just the opportunity your student needs—a day camp like no other and only Newton County School System (NCSS) elementary students can attend. That’s right, rising kindergarten through fifth grade NCSS students will have the unique opportunity to spend the week of June 13-17, 2016 learning about plants, wildlife animals, farm animals and more at the 2016 Summer Aggie Academy at Newton College and Career Academy, located at 144 Ram Drive, Covington, Georgia.
According to Cecily Bullock, Alcovy High School FFA Advisor, lots of outdoor play, games, hands-on activities, crafts, and guest speakers are also on the Aggie Academy agenda. All activities connect to agriculture and our community.
“We will keep the students busy throughout the week with lots activities and all of them will connect to agriculture and our community,” said Bullock. “This is a great opportunity for our FFA students to not only teach others about a variety of agriculture topics but to also share their love for agriculture with younger students in our community. We hope this camp will serve as a way to connect our kids with the elementary school children in our area and start conversations about the importance of agriculture at home with their families.”
Bullock said Alcovy and Eastside FFA students will take part in a two-day leadership class that focuses on building public speaking skills and teamwork to help prepare them to serve as camp counselors to Aggie Academy campers.
“The young campers will be gaining skills and knowledge that will impact their education,” said Bullock. “And our FFA members will also be gaining just as much if not more from this camp. It’s a win-win for all of the students who will participate in Aggie Academy.”
A $100 registration fee for the camp, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, is due by June 3 and includes a t-shirt, all activities and events, as well as a daily snack. Students will need to bring their own lunch each day. Due to space restrictions, only the first 150 students registered will be accepted. A completed registration form and check payable to “Alcovy FFA” should be mailed or hand-delivered to Alcovy FFA, Attention: Ms. Cecily Bullock, 14567 Georgia 36, Covington, Georgia 30014. Parents will receive an email confirmation of registration along with the Aggie Academy Information Packet once payment has been received.
