VTR 1999 Portland

A national meet of a marque register is a week when several hundred examples of one make of car occupy a single field, and the photograph that opens this page — a view that catches only about two thirds of that field — is the most honest record of what such a gathering feels like. This is the index to one year's meet, held in Maine, from the pages of an owner who went and photographed it.

The structure of the index is the structure of the event. There is a list of the members present; parking at the host hotel, which at a marque meet is itself an exhibition; the cars on the field sorted the way the judging sorts them, by model group, by special interest and by modification; a historic factory car singled out; and then the competitive part, an autocross run over several days with its own pages of photographs. At the end come the results — autocross standings by fastest time and by class, and the concours placings.

Anyone thinking of taking a car to a national meet can read the running order off a page like this: arrive, park, show, compete, and stay for the awards. The page is kept as it was published on this domain; the club's current meets and results are published by the register itself.
