On August 13, Conyers own and former Ga Tech pitcher Buck Farmer made his MLB debut for the Detroit Tigers.  I have written about Buck FarmerBuck and his family here before.  I can’t imagine the joy his family felt when he fulfilled this lifelong dream.  It ain’t easy to make it to the top level of any professional sport.  Buck did Rockdale County and Ga Tech proud.  I know we all hope this is the start of a long career in the majors.

Just to give you an idea how special this is, my quick research shows only 4 professional athletes ever from Conyers.  Buck, David Elder, who pitched for Ga Tech as well as the Cleveland Indians, and Jesse Baker, of RCHS ’79, who had an 8 year NFL career mostly with the Houston Oilers.  Clint Mathis played for the US World Cup soccer team, which in the soccer world is as high an honor.  There may be more, if there are, I’d like to know about them!  But two of these four went through Ga Tech to get to the top.

Go Jackets!
