Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall announced today that its Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Sunday, June 26, 2016. The 50-member Tour Choir will spend several days sightseeing in the Big Apple before appearing on stage at Carnegie as a solo ensemble. Fans of the choir will be able to follow its adventures via social media sites, where choir members will be posting photos and comments with the hashtag “#SHCCNYC.”
“Carnegie Hall is without doubt one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical and popular music,” said Dr. Martha Shaw, founder and director of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir. “To be asked to perform on its stage as a solo ensemble is the ultimate badge of musical honor, and testament to the talent and artistry of our Tour Choir. This concert will be a huge event in these children’s lives, and is an honor well-deserved.”
The choir is scheduled to perform in Isaac Stern Auditorium, Carnegie’s main auditorium seating 2,800, with a multinational program featuring songs in Russian, Spanish, French, German, Sanskrit and English, reflecting the varied cultures of New York City. Dr. Shaw will conduct the advanced singers of the Tour Choir, accompanied by pianist Judy Mason. Performing with the choir on “The World is Full of Poetry” will be oboist Natalie Beckenbaugh, a choir alumna. The choir’s presentation of “Georgia on My Mind” will include arranger Randall Reese on sax, as well as New York musicians Bryan Carter on drums and Daniel Stein on bass
The tour won’t be all work for the choir members, who will have plenty of time to experience the sights and sounds of New York City during their five-day trip. In addition to seeing many of the more well-known landmarks, a highlight of the visit will include a Broadway performance of Fiddler on the Roof.
“I am excited for the choir to be on the stage at Carnegie Hall so people can see what we do and how the choir’s music can impact people,” said Tour Choir member Sidney Looney, McDonough, Georgia. “The exposure will be great!”
“Why am I excited? That seems like a funny question – it’s Carnegie Hall!” added singer Breanna Cauble, also from McDonough. “I can hardly wait!”
“Both girls are really looking forward to performing the final selection, ‘Music Down in My Soul,’ and hitting that great soprano part!” said Carol Abarr, general manager of the choir.
Spivey Hall Children’s Choir members and staff will share the tour experience with followers via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram, posting photos, comments and videos on the social media sites. Family, friends and followers should look for posts with the hashtag “#SHCCNYC” to follow the event.
DCINY, Distinguished Concerts International New York, is hosting and organizing the concert. Tickets are available now for purchase at www.carnegiehall.org or call 212-247-7800.
