tai-chiWorking out is hard work, but it can still be fun. If you are struggling to maintain a challenging exercise regimen, consider incorporating the following alternative workouts into your program:

  1. Barre exercises: Barre classes are ballet-inspired workouts that tone the entire body, improve posture and increase flexibility. Most barre exercises include planks, pushups, arm exercises and lower-body exercises on the bar. And though classes can be pricey, there are barre DVD exercises you can do from the comfort of your home.
  2. Hiking: Hiking is a great form of cardio. It strengthens the large muscles in the body and boosts your adrenaline levels and endorphins. You also benefit by getting your daily dose of vitamin D. So take a break from the gym and get the workout of a lifetime in the great outdoors.
  3. Water Aerobics: Water workouts are high energy, low-impact exercises that increase muscle strength, increase flexibility and burn calories. Water exercises are a fun way to lose weight and get your heart rate up while taking it easy on your joints.
  4. Zumba: Zumba is a fun, energetic way to dance away the pounds. This festive aerobic workout incorporates hip hop, soca, and salsa footwork into its routines. And it’s a great way to unwind, get a total body workout, and boost your heart rate.
  5. Tai Chi: Tai Chi is a graceful, low-impact exercise that is safe for all ages. Tai Chi utilizes a series of movements that flow into the next one without stopping. It can be done at your own speed and it is a great way to reduce stress.
