When she made the decision to run for office in 2008, Nancy Schulz did so because the community that she represents is rich in diversity with newcomers from other cities, states and countries who are now calling Newton County home. She also did not grow up in Newton County, but like many others, she came here because Newton County is a welcoming community that offers a high level of quality of life for all citizens. Her family moved here for a prosperous life and she believes Newton County continues to provide a strong sense of community, warmth and hospitality.

Over the past 15 years, the tremendous growth seen in Newton has tasked us with re-examining our ordinances. We started this process with overlays in the western part of the county because we recognized that growth strained our infrastructure. As we continue to grow, it is essential that we address future growth and place high standards for that growth to enable our community to thrive. Secondly, we changed our alcohol ordinance, and in the next month, we will again modernize our alcohol ordinances.

The County is also making changes to the way in which it handles our waste stream. She looks forward to working collaboratively with the Solid Waste Authority to identify solutions in the future.

When our population reached 100,000 people, it became apparent that our form of government also had to change. This has been challenging, and over the last 4 years, has created uncertainty. To address these challenges, we will move forward in January 2023 with the new form of government. No longer can we continue to operate the way in which we did when we were a county of 40,000 citizens. All of these tough decisions and changes have been made with input from our citizens, which she encourages to continue in the future.

As Nancy Schulz knocked on thousands of doors and spoke with residents during her recent campaign, she learned how truly diverse our community has become. Our community includes people from all walks of life and corners of the world bringing their vibrant cultures and customs to Newton County.

We must embrace and respect the cultures of all of our residents – as one strong community. As a Commissioner, she is committed to hearing our residents and serving as a voice in county government for all Newton County citizens. Additionally, we are all fortunate to live in a county with numerous community organizations, dedicated county staff and law enforcement who are taking positive measures to move this great county forward.

For many people, change is a difficult process and fear can be a powerful motivator. Through it all, we as a community have thrived and we will continue to thrive and prosper. She will not sit idly by and say nothing. It is not who she am. It is not who we are as a community. It is not who we are as a nation.  Nancy Schulz is committed to ensuring that our zoning processes will protect the safety and welfare of all who live, work and play in Newton County and will be in accordance with our Constitution – we can be no less than that.

We are not perfect and we still have work to do. But, we must forge this path together and that means that we have to seek understanding. Together, we must fulfill the destiny and legacy of greatness that is Newton County.
