Winter Golf

wintergolfWinter golf is the worst, or is it?  I look for any reason I can to not chase that little white ball that feels just like a frozen rock when you make contact.  Then I find myself doing items on the “honey do” list around the house and find every reason in the world to get to the golf course. I thought I would share some of secrets to manage the weather conditions this time of year.

I know what many of you are thinking…filling my flask up and stashing it in my golf bag is not an option. I try to abstain while on the golf course, unlike several of my buddies. I’ll not mention their names in case their wives mistake this article for a “How to be a better wife” magazine. I do have several things that could help you if you too choose golf over the honey do list.

Planning is so important.  Try to get a tee time in the hottest part of day between 10:00am to 2:00pm. You should always put your clubs inside the house the night before (sorry wives) it’s not like they ask you to clean them.  Although, believe it or not, my wife loves to clean my clubs when I bring them in.  Maybe she’s looking for that flask or my wallet.  Use soft balls and make sure your balls are kept at room temperature the night before.  Even your shoes should get the same TLC.  Make sure you dress in layers so you can shed a couple of them if needed.  It’s tough to swing with too many clothes on. Get there early and warm up properly. Stretching should be a major part of your routine.  After the normal driving range ritual, don’t forget to stop by the chipping and putting areas.  It’s a real good chance you won’t be stripping the ball as crisp as usual or compressing the ball like you normally do so getting up and down and putting will be key to achieving your normal score.

It’s also a great time of the year to get the best golf deals.  For example, we just booked two tee times at the Ritz Carlton Oconee course this Friday for $58.00 a piece.  Hard to beat that especially if you are trying to impress customers and show them a good time without breaking the bank.  I’ve invited a customer and good friend Jeff who loves to golf and gamble and has not figured out yet that he’s not that good.  So please don’t tell him.  Christmas is coming.

Merry Christmas to all!

Till next tee time
