Registration for April 29 auditions begins in March
Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall announced on February 28, 2023 that its Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will open registration for its April 29 auditions beginning March 1. The choir’s 24th season (2017 – 2018) begins in late August.
“School budget cuts have eliminated choir programs and even all music programs in many schools,” said Dr. Martha Shaw, artistic director and founder of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir, “yet study after study shows that music learning benefits all learning, including language development and spatial intelligence. We have found that the students participating in our choir program see a positive effect on their academic achievement and overall well-being, while learning how to work together to create beautiful music.”
Shaw is looking for singers, boys and girls, between the ages of 10 and 13; no previous musical experience is necessary. Those wishing to audition must register in advance; there are three methods.

The 170 members of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Program perform in three choirs and draw from 17 metro-Atlanta counties. The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir is the largest ensemble of the program, featuring some 120 singers ages 10 to 18. The Spivey Hall Young Artists features 60 students ages 10 through 13, and perform a wide range of repertoire that equips singers with the skills they need to participate in the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir.
The select members of the Spivey Hall Tour Choir comprise the traveling performance group for the choir program. Students in Tour Choir commit to a more extensive rehearsal and performance schedule, including an annual summer tour; last summer the group travelled to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall as a solo ensemble. As cultural ambassadors of the State of Georgia, the Tour Choir has performed to acclaim throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Sweden, Norway, England, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, China, and Scotland. They have also professionally recorded four CDs.
Parents and students interested in learning more about the choir program are invited to attend an Open House at Spivey Hall on the campus of Clayton State University in Morrow on Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. There, they can hear the choirs in action, experience a group audition and ask any questions they wish to ask.
