Organizers Double Goal to 100 Solar Roofs; Residents Have One Week Left to Express Interest and Lock in Savings
Residents and businesses in DeKalb, County have a little less than a week to enroll in Solarize Decatur-DeKalb via the coalition’s’ website www.solarizedecatur.com. After the program expires on January 31, homeowners will have another three months to get a free solar evaluation and decide if they want to sign a contract for solar and start saving on their energy costs.
Organizers of Solarize Decatur-DeKalb (including the Decatur Sustainability Board, Environment Georgia, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club, Solar Crowd Source and the solar installers, Creative Solar USA and Hannah Solar) are eager to turn early success into the most successful Solarize campaign in Georgia. “We want to build 100 solar roofs in DeKalb County,” said Jennette Gayer, the director of Environment Georgia. “If we hit our goal, DeKalb County will likely be the number one county for residential installs in the state.”
Since Solarize Decatur-DeKalb launched on September 1st, over 750 residents of DeKalb County have signed up to express interest in the program, 51 homes have committed to putting solar on their roofs for a total 349.8 kW, once in operation this solar will eliminate 685,000 lbs. of CO2 from the atmosphere.
“We’ve thought about solar before but the Solarize program delivered a vetted installer and cost savings which helped our family decide that now was the time to go solar,” said Donna Brogan one of the owners of the first home ‘solarized’ in the Solarize Decatur-DeKalb program. “The dollar and time savings are a real value.”
The program has a declining tiered pricing schedule which means the more people that sign-up, the higher the tier and the lower the price. Solarize Decatur-DeKalb has already hit the highest tier and cheapest price. When signing up, residents will be asked some basic information about their home and energy usage in order to lock-in the savings, free evaluation, high quality materials and other benefits that come with the program.
Organizers will hold a final Solarize Town Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 25th at the Decatur Co-Works building (708 Church St, Decatur, GA 30030) from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
