You know they say age is a state of mind. I believe that. I don’t feel my age, I don’t particularly act my age, just ask my grandchildren, and I am just vain enough to think I don’t look my age!
Living in this day and age you have to be able to adjust, no matter your age. Think technology. Now, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to technology, but I try and there are things I know I am good at. Just for the record, I can download music, email, google, and you will not find anyone better at shopping online – Amazon is my best friend at 2:00 a.m.
This brings me to thinking of Mama. My Mama loved to shop and when I say shop she held a Master’s Degree. The woman could sniff out a sale better than a bloodhound. I often wonder if she would have bought into the whole online shopping deal. I tend to think no. For Mama, I think half the fun was the hunt and online is just not the same. It is more like shooting skeet than hunting a fox. I digress.
In today’s world you have to adapt no matter your age. I understand there are some things which occur as one ages that simply can’t be helped. Those are the things that really take some adjustment. And that is what is happening in our house these days. I live with a senior!
First, the hair starts to turn gray and in some cases it will thin out, somewhat minor, but never-the-less still hard to face. Next thing you begin to notice the loss of hearing. I often think of Erma Bombeck and refer to it as ‘convenient’ hearing. But you notice that you have to talk louder and more direct, otherwise you are pretty much ignored or not heard at all. It’s the same no matter how you look at it.
The eyesight starts to fade. That’s kind of sad.
You feel like you are constantly running to the doctor for things that used to be minor but seem more bothersome with age. Daily medication and diet is always a nuisance but both must be observed. Oh, and then there are the ‘potty’ issues. Sweet heavens, never stray far from the loo! I did not know fluids could pass through so quickly and so often – up and down, up and down, good thing we have DVR and pause buttons. For the record we won’t go into the other. Let’s just say we own stock in Fiber One and Imodium – you just never know. Trust me if things are not going well in that department. It can be hazardous on so many levels or flammable depending on the circumstances.
A lot of sleeping goes on in a house with a senior. It’s the loudest sleeping I have ever heard!
So, while it can be a challenge living with a senior, the good far outweighs the bad. Good times can still be had; good days outnumber the bad. All in all I think I will keep him. It’s hard to imagine life without Gizmo!
