By: Sen. Tonya Anderson (D- Lithonia)
Monday, January 9th, marked the start of the 2023 legislative session in the state of Georgia and Senator Tonya Anderson’s first day as a state senator. Fifty-five senators from across the state took the oath of office and officially became state senators of their respective districts. She looks forward to working hard during their 40 day session to create positive change under the gold dome for everyone in District 43 and the state.
On January 9, 2023, Senator Anderson was officially sworn in as a state senator after serving in the Georgia House of Representatives for three years. She was also given her committee assignments, which include serving as a member of Public Safety, Retirement, and Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committees. As a retired Air Force Veteran herself, she is especially eager to advocate for veterans and their families. She believes that her experience in each of these areas will allow her to be able to contribute to these committees.
The Senator looks forward to working with her fellow senators to ensure the state passes legislation that creates fair and equal opportunities for all. The first step in this is to pass a balanced budget, which is constitutionally required of the Georgia General Assembly. She will be working hard to make sure every entity in the state is appropriately funded and funds are allocated where they are most needed.
On Monday, Jan. 16, the Senate took a day off to recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As Atlanta was the home of this great, influential man, let us all remember the sacrifice he made for equality. May we all carry his principles with us and let his work inspire us to create change of our own right here at the state Capitol.
As we work through the next 36 legislative days, Senator Anderson will continue to work to keep your interests at the top of her priorities. If you have any questions comments or concerns relating to legislation or our district, please do not hesitate to call her office. It is an honor for her to serve you and she appreciates your feedback and prayers for a successful legislative session.
