Last Thursday, Senate Bill 208 was signed by Governor Nathan Deal into law. Senator JaNice VanNess (R- Conyers) carried SB 208, which allows for a voter referendum that would incorporate and constitute a charter for the City of Stonecrest in DeKalb County if the measure is approved by voters during elections on May 24, 2016.

“SB 208 is important to the local community and citizens of District 43,” said Sen. VanNess. “Since this is a referendum and gives citizens the authority to make a local decision and direct the future of their community, I encourage everyone to come out and vote and ensure your voice is heard.”

SB 208 establishes a referendum which will be voted on by the citizens in the proposed areas of DeKalb County. They will vote in favor or against the measure to incorporate the City of Stonecrest. If the measure is approved, SB 208 outlines all the powers, functions, rights, privileges and immunities of the city, its officers, agencies or employees. The Stonecrest Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Stonecrest/Lithonia Industrial Park Community Improvement District would also be created. SB 208 details the terms and qualifications for office for the Mayor and councilmembers and describes how elections will be run for these offices. The initial mayor and city council members will be elected during the November 2016 general election. The general power and authority of the Mayor and city council are also outlined as well as designated salaries.
