Newton County to Serve as Employment Site for Summer Youth Work Experience Program

By eMetro Times | on June 1, 2016 | 0 Comment
eMetro News Featured Newton

timeclockHigh school and college students will soon begin to clock in for work this summer at Newton County as part of the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission’s (NEGRC) 2016 Summer Work Experience Program.

The program is designed to provide youth ages 14-21 with opportunities to gain valuable work experience and prepare them to secure unsubsidized employment in the future.

“Newton County is excited to participate as a 2016 Summer Work Experience Program worksite,” Human Resources Director Keyra Fray said. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to give students an in-depth look at local government beyond the classroom and bring in extra temporary help for various departments at no cost to the County.”

The 5-week program runs June 6 through July 9 and students are able to work a maximum of 30 hours per week in participating county departments, such as Human Resources and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, where they will be assigned duties and responsibilities based on their career interests.

The wages are paid for by the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) through NEGRC and the participants are covered under the NEGRC Workforce Development Board Worker’s Compensation Insurance Policy.

Youth who are currently enrolled in the ACTION, Inc. WIOA In-School Youth Year Round Program are eligible to work at participating worksites this summer across the 12-county area, which includes Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton Counties.

For more information, please contact Keyra Fray at [email protected] or 678-625-1212.
