On Tuesday, December 1st Newton College and Career Academy will invite business, nonprofit and educational professionals from the community to attend a Networking Luncheon from 11:00am-1:00pm in the Cafeteria. The students are required to wear business professional dress that day, and treat this event as if were a real networking luncheon. Since the beginning of the school year, students have been learning about professional soft skills such as handshaking, business ‘small talk’, and active listening. Students are reminded to turn their phones off and really engage in conversation with their guests.
The Networking Luncheon will comprise of 4 lunch periods, and one to two adults will sit at a table with six students and get to know them by asking several questions. Some examples of questions might be: Tell me about yourself. What is your favorite subject at school, and why? What are your short term/long term goals? What school activities do you participate in? What are your strengths? What personal characteristics do you feel are necessary for success? After the lunch period is over and the students have left the table, the adults will fill out a short survey and feedback form on how the students did. The results will be given back to them the next day. It is strongly suggested that adults at the table give positive feedback and suggest skills that need improving.
In addition to the Networking Luncheon, the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (student entrepreneurs) will have a Seasonal Showcase in the media center which will showcase their start-up companies and have several handcrafted items for sale. This is the perfect time to stock up on those early holiday gifts!
If you are a professional who would like to participate in this event, please contact: Jill McGiboney at [email protected] or at 678-625-6788.
