ncss-book-busThe Newton County School System (NCSS) Book Bus has been restocked and will hit the road this Saturday, December 17 to deliver free books for children in the local community to read during the holiday break. The NCSS Book Bus will visit the following locations:

LOCATION ARRIVAL TIME
City of Porterdale Historic Gym 9:00 AM
Riverside Estates Mobile Home & Travel Trailer Park 10:00 AM
Housing Authority of the City of Covington 11:00 AM
Jamestown (Lee Street @ 2nd Avenue) Noon

The NCSS Book Bus has provided over 8,000 books to young children and teenagers in the Newton County community since the school system launched the program in 2015.

“The ability to read is fundamental to a child’s success in school,” said NCSS Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey. “There is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. In addition, reading is fundamental to function in today’s society and it is a vital skill in finding a good job. And of course, reading is fun! We want to promote the love of reading and encourage our students to pick up a good book whenever they can and the holiday break is the perfect time to do so.”

According to Shannon Buff, NCSS Director of Secondary Education, the Book Bus is stocked with a wide variety of books for children from infant to young adult.

“There’s something for everyone,” said Buff. “We have books for toddlers learning their first words to story books for elementary kids and chapter books and novels for the older students.”

She added, “The Book Bus offers students a great opportunity to stock up with many exciting books that they don’t have to pay for and never have to return. It’s a great way to build their own personal library.”
