Making Senior Dads Feel Special on Father’s Day

grandfatherA father or grandfather has traditionally been the stable head of the household.  He has been the role model.  He has been the mentor.  He may have been the one who taught you to ride your first bicycle and how to cast a fishing line.  He was the person you might talk long hours about politics with.  You might have many treasured moments of quality time spent with Dad and Grandpa.

When Dad or Grandpa gets into his senior years, he may be stubborn in accepting he can’t take on that role of responsibility anymore.  But you still want to cherish those times you hold dear and continue to make special time with him.  That is why finding the perfect activity to do with Dad is so important on Father’s Day.

What activities does your father or grandfather enjoy?   You might not want him to steer the boat to your favorite fishing spot if he can’t see well, but he probably still loves to fish.  In this case, you may need to reverse roles.  Why not be the person to take him fishing?  Whether you have a boat, rent a boat, or drive to a fishing pier, you can arrange a great outing around fishing.  Be careful of the heat by providing plenty of fluids and shade.  And if you are fishing from a land location, find a spot that is paved or even for easy walking.  Choosing the best location for accessibility is especially important if your senior Dad or Grandpa has a cane, walker, or other assistance that aids in his movement.

Is your father or grandfather a camping or picnic enthusiast?  Although your senior father or grandfather may need more time getting around, he still can enjoy a great weekend in an RV at a campground.  Just make sure you address any concerns for comfort and proximity to the amenities in advance.  And if you are concerned that too long of a weekend will put stress on both of you, plan for a picnic instead.  You will still want to address concerns for comfort and proximity to amenities.  A picnic might be easier to invite a group of people to make this time special.  And grilled meat and vegetables can be very healthy picnic foods for our seniors.  Be mindful of the heat.  Make sure you choose a spot with a camp chair for Dad in the shade and have plenty of drinking water available.

There are many things you can do with a senior Dad or Grandpa to celebrate Father’s Day.  If your father loves the garden, plan to do something there.  If it is movies, think about renting some old classics like one of the older Star Trek or James Bond movies, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn, Master in Command, or Last of the Mohicans.  While planning the events, if your senior has caregivers ask them how much of what you plan that he can realistically do and what special needs he may have.  They can help provide tips to make your plans the most enjoyable.  And remember, no matter what activity you choose to do with Dad or Grandpa on Father’s Day, remember to grab a few stories from him.  He is probably full of knowledge that he can share no matter what activity you choose.
