This winter, the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Heritage High School brings to our community an encore performance of the musical Les Miserables. This show of heartache, forgiveness, and triumph centers on the life and adventures of Jean Val Jean. Once a prisoner, he finds his way to success through the ups and downs of the French Revolution. While being chased by police inspector Javert, the reformed criminal encounters the redemption wrought by self-sacrificing love that offers grace instead of vengeance.
“I truly believe that anyone can connect with this show,” said senior Ramone Nelson, “There is a moment for everyone. Whether you are a parent or a student falling in love for the first time, you can find some solace in the lives depicted.”
The excitement of seeing the show extends not only to the cast, but to the entire community. This production of Les Miserables is yet another example of the talent and creativity that resides in our own backyard. The artistic team led by Director Michelle Thorne brings a new take on the classic musical and highlights the universality of the themes of oppression, grace, and redemption by choosing a post-apocalyptic style for the costumes and set.
According to Thorne, “If we can embody the message of Les Miserables, perhaps we can pay forward the grace and forgiveness it takes to bring peace to our communities…and our world.”
