Health Modalities: Good Things Come in Threes

Marge in purple 4014There is a trio of natural health modalities that can enhance your health – homeopathy, chiropractic and massage. All three of these therapies are related in several ways and all strive to improve your health by non-invasive means.

Most consumers are very familiar with massage but consider it only as a luxury; they don’t appreciate it as a therapeutic modality. Both professionally and personally, it is a necessary form of preventive medicine.

“As President of an FDA-registered facility, I would say I have a bit of stress in my life. I have had a standing appointment for an hour-long massage every Wednesday for four years now,” said Marge Roberts.

Research and common sense point to stress as the cause or exacerbation of many diseases. Lymphatic massage, developed in Germany, is used for degenerative conditions. Massage is also routinely used for relief of pain and recovery from accidents.

Chiropractic, massage and homeopathy all give credence to the idea of ‘life force’. With chiropractic, the force may be stimulated or liberated through the removal of subluxations (slight misalignments of the vertebrae), with homeopathy by stimulation using homeopathic remedies and with massage through manual techniques which help release the force. These natural therapies view disease as a disruption of the individual’s vital force, whereas the western medical model most often sees disease as caused by an outside force attacking the body.

Each of these three complementary approaches utilize only natural measures to address disease (or imbalance). There is no cutting, no toxic chemical drugs. They seek to support the natural processes of the body, rather than attack the offending agent (bacteria, virus, radiation, etc.) with chemicals or remove the offending agent with surgery.

Chiropractic and homeopathy are related in several other ways. Of special interest is their historical sharing of Hippocrates’ words. He is credited with the comment, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is requisite for many diseases.” This sounds like chiropractic. Hippocrates is also credited with speaking about the “science of similars and minimal doses” – sounds like “similia similibus curentur” or like cures like – which is the foundation of homeopathy.

Herring’s Law is recognized in both homeopathy and chiropractic as well. Herring’s Law states that healing is believed to progress from more vital to less vital organs and systems, from above down, from inside to outside, and in reverse order of appearance. For example, from above down means that the head (mind) may feel better before the actual aches and pains of the body dissipate. In addition, both chiropractic and homeopathy seek to find and remove the underlying cause of a disease, rather than simply medicate or treat the symptoms.

Wouldn’t you want to find out why you have that rash and not just suppress it with steroids?

One of the most popular uses for homeopathy is for detoxification. Individual remedies are noted in the Materia Medica (the book that lists homeopathics and indications for their use) and specific to detoxification. Many companies manufacture complexes that are made up of a combination of numerous single remedies.

Massage as well is credited with a detoxification component. As the muscles are massaged, circulation is enhanced. Every good massage therapist encourages drinking water after a massage to help the toxins move out of the body.

It’s not a question of either-or. These three modalities complement one another. Considering that disease is a disruption in vital force – an imbalance in the body –  then it makes perfect sense that multiple modalities which affect that vital force can be utilized together.

Consider using these natural modalities to empower your body’s natural healing processes rather than toxic drugs and surgery. There obviously is a place for drugs and surgery, and we want them to be available when needed.

You should always check with your primary health practitioner before changing your health regime, but you are encouraged to talk with them about living a healthy lifestyle and replacing some of the toxins with this trinity. If you want to consider the natural health trinity – think massage, chiropractic and homeopathy.
