Local residents will soon have the opportunity to gain a behind the scenes look at how their local government operates. Beginning August 4, 2016, the City of Covington will host a Civics 101 class. Participants will meet the evenings of August 4, 10, 18 and 25 at City Hall where they will learn about the different departments within the City and their responsibilities.
The class is free of charge, it will be held at City Hall and other City of Covington properties and each class will last approximately two hours. Covering all of the city’s responsibilities, this is an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn about day-to-day operations of their local government.
“When you take a step back and think about it, there is so much the City of Covington is responsible for,” said City Manager Leigh Anne Knight. “From public safety and land acquisitions to road maintenance, water reclamation and everything in between, we are very diversified in our responsibilities. I am confident anyone who participates in this program will find it to be a valuable and educational experience.”
City Council members, mayor Ronnie Johnston, city manager Leigh Anne Knight, fire Chief Stoney Bowles, police chief Stoney Bowles and numerous City of Covington department heads are scheduled to speak and field questions.
Anticipated topics covered include: government structure, role of the mayor, city manager responsibilities, tourism, utilities overview, water reclamation and land application services, public works and solid waste, airport operations, planning and zoning, city growth and infrastructure (engineering), police department, fire department, and 911 center overviews.
Participants do not have to live in the Covington city limits and those interested in participating can email Trey Sanders at [email protected] or call 770-385-2000.
