The City of Covington is currently completing phase one of a three phase sidewalk project. Stretching from the Covington Crossing shopping center on Highway 278, the current phase will end at the Turner Lake roundabout.
“The City of Covington has been working on connectivity for decades now and this is a key part of our plan,” said City of Covington transportation manager Ken Swain. Phase one calls for 1,000 feet of sidewalk that is 60 inches wide and will cost approximately $85,000 to complete. The City of Covington is responsible for $35,000 with the remaining $50,000 being paid for by a Georgia Department of Transportation grant. Work is scheduled to be complete by Dec. 31, 2016.
The concept for phases two and three are awaiting approval by the City Council, but would connect the Turner Lake roundabout sidewalk to Washington Street.
“We are seeing a shift in the way people travel,” Swain said. “More and more people are using alternate means of transportation like bicycles and walking. These sidewalks will play an integral role in safely helping pedestrians on their journeys.”
