Boost Your Metabolism

eMetro Life Expert Advice Your Health

Brandi WellsAccording to Merriam-Webster:  me·tab·o·lism: the chemical processes by which a plant or an animal uses food, water, etc., to grow and heal and to make energy

When you have a newborn the routine is feeding time every couple of hours.  As the child grows we push a schedule with wider intervals between feeding – meals and snacks.  Upon the entry to school, typically you see this meal routine stretch to a 3 x per day feeding perhaps with an afterschool snack.  Throughout the growth of the individual the “norm” will most likely become a 3 meal a day habit.

According to the basic definition of metabolism you are fueling your body with food, water, etc. to grow and make energy.  As you take a look at your energy levels and the way your mood and behaviors change throughout the day, consider BRINGING THE SNACK BACK!  This doesn’t mean hitting the vending machine for high calorie, high sugar snacks and drinks.  Take a look at all the alternatives you may have been missing:  a handful of nuts, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, lean ham or turkey deli meat, yogurt, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, squash, etc.), cottage cheese, baked or steamed vegetables and water.  This may take some preplanning on your part but can save you time and money, provide incredible energy for your day and boost your overall health.

By taking a moment for a morning and afternoon snack you can keep your engine running better.  Your metabolism can increase to help burn more calories and fuel your day.  You will most likely find that you are making better meal choices and eating smaller portion sizes as well.  You may also be able to turn that increase in energy and stamina into an exercise routine for an even bigger benefit!
