The Rockdale County Autism Support Group (RCASG) received a donation of bike helmets for its iCan Shine Bike Camp from the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office this week. “We are very grateful for the support of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office. Our riders and parents will be ecstatic in receiving this special gift supporting their efforts to learn to ride a bike”, says Esther Maclin, Camp Director. The five-day camp will be held from July 6-10, 2015 at Rockdale County High School.
This is the 2nd annual camp being hosted in Conyers by the RCASG to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. The mission of RCASG is to provide social support and recreational opportunities for autistic individuals and their families; to help connect families and individuals with community resources; to partner with local and regional agencies to create and attract more community resources for autism; to do educational and outreach programming; and to serve as a liaison between the autism community and local service providers and to advocate for high-quality autism resources in our county.
iCan Shine uses adapted equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. With 75 minutes of instruction daily over five days, over 80% of riders learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of camp.
To be eligible to enroll, riders must be at least eight years old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds. The cost of the camp is $150.00 for the week.
