The Academy of Liberal Arts at Newton High School (ALANHS) is conducting registration for the 2016-2017 school year. Newton County School System students currently enrolled in the eighth grade whose parents reside in Newton County are eligible to apply. Applications for admission are available on both the Newton County School System and the Newton High School webpages (see below for links). Completed applications must be submitted to the Counseling Office of the student’s zone/home middle school no later than the end of the school day, February 29, 2016. All students and parents interested in learning more about the ALANHS program are encouraged to attend the ALANHS Open House Night on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Newton High School. Open house begins at 6:30 p.m.; however, doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
The ALANHS is an intense four-year academic experience that prepares students for the rigors of university studies. It is distinguished from other academic environments by providing participating students with a rigorous, accelerated curriculum, four years of inquiry-based instruction, partnership with Oxford College of Emory University, and sustained community involvement. The ALANHS program provides highly motivated college-bound students with the opportunity to pursue a rigorous STEM and liberal arts curriculum.
In addition to the ALANHS application packet, prospective students must submit two completed evaluation forms, including one from a core subject (math, science, social studies, or English language arts) current eighth-grade teacher. A letter of recommendation from either a community/service organization leader or a club sponsor/coach, youth group leader, enrichment program coordinator, etc., is also required, as is a copy of the student’s transcripts, which can be obtained from the school counselor.
Once completed applications have been submitted, each prospective student will meet with the ALANHS interview panel during the time period of March 12-March 28, 2016. The interview process will include an opportunity for the student to present a special talent to the panel. Presentations may be inclusive of, but not limited to: social science presentation, creative writing samples, oratorical speech, creative dance, visual arts, portfolio samples, musical selections, etc.
The total number of students being accepted into the 2016-2017 ALANHS Cohort has been limited to 55. Finalists will be notified on May 13, 2016, and must confirm acceptance no later than May 27, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. Waitlist finalists will be on standby until June 3, 2016.
