A Special Memory at Walk of Heroes

By Audra Gerger | on May 4, 2015 | 0 Comment
eMetro Life Featured

War MemorialThe Walk of Heroes/Veterans War Memorial will host a special event in early May in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War.  May 7, 2015 marks the 40th Anniversary.  The event honors all men and women that served in the US Armed Forces from August 1st, 1950 until May 7th, 1975. The special event will consist of multiple ceremonies and displays at the Walk of Heroes/Veterans War Memorial from May 6 through May 12, 2015.

The highlight of the special event will be the Moving Wall.  As we reflect on the 40th Anniversary, the Moving Wall will be available for the local public to see.  The Moving Wall is a 3/5 scaled replica of the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C.  Since 1984, the wall has traveled around the country to provide a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. Four helicopters, combat photography, and equipment used during the Vietnam War will also be on display for public viewing.  All displays will be interactive and educational.

To kick off the event on May 5, 2015, the Braves vs Phillies baseball game will be a tribute to the Vietnam Era/Vietnam War Veterans and their families.  This will be a special night for veterans, their families, and their supporters as we honor, recognize, and remember.  A pre-game parade of veterans and their families will begin at 6 pm.  Then at 7 pm there will be a field ceremony in commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War.  Commemorative t-shirts and lanyards in the Vietnam Service ribbon colors of red, yellow, and green are available to purchase through a flyer on the website at www.walkofheroes.org.

Come support and join in honoring our heroes in May.  Invite others to join you.  We have many seniors in our community to share this event with and who have personal stories to learn from as well.  The Moving Wall will arrive at the Walk of Heroes in Black Shoals Park on May 6, 2015 and then at noon on May 7th the park and all displays will be open 24 hours a day with free access and parking until May 12, 2015.  Black Shoals Park is located at 3001 Black Shoals Road, Conyers, Georgia 30012 (off of GA Hwy 20 in northern Rockdale County).
