You don’t wake up one morning and say, “I’m going into business with my husband, children and grandchildren.” It is something that evolves, it seems, from a life-time of experiences and interests. Yes, we worked with each other in similar and related businesses over the years, but that’s not quite in the same dynamic. When Copy Central was just a good idea, we were not working together.
My husband was a Real Estate Broker, happy and comfortable. Then I told him I needed a delivery driver. And by the way, he would have to work for free for a while.
We opened Copy Central in 1998 as a production center servicing the print needs of the education and business community. It started as a family-owned and operated business, and 18 years later it still is with a few co-workers added in. We are located on Parker Road in Conyers with a branch on Powers Ferry Road in Atlanta. We are three generations working in both locations.
Our print capabilities are state of the art. Offering full service black and white as well as full color prints, oversize color, and oversize black and white prints. We print signs, posters, and banners. If you can think it, we have a full design team that can take an idea, put it on paper, and then print it in any format needed. We deal with big, small and new business, parties, weddings and social functions, education, and fund raisers. We wrap autos and trucks as well.
Our Conyers location has mother, daughter, son, two grandsons, daughter-in-law, and two additional co-workers (Dotti, Kathy, Brady, Grandsons Bobby and Chance, Shayna, Rain, and Alex).
Our downtown location has husband, daughter, grandson, and four additional co-workers (Bob, Laura, Grandson Cody, and coworkers Dave, David, Danny, and Chris).
If you think working in a family business has challenges above and beyond normal, you are right. It’s hard sometimes to keep things in perspective when you really want to put your grandkids over your knee and shake some reality into them. You take a long, deep, hard breath. Keep focused, and turn it into a simple training session.
We are all strong willed and always right, so we don’t always see eye to eye. But even with all that, we respect each other’s talents and expertise, and things run surprisingly smoothly. We are all aware that the customer comes first. We take care of our customers and go above and beyond to make sure that their needs are met. At the end of the day, I think we enjoy working together as a family. It is a warm, safe feeling and for one, I feel proud that I can watch the business grow and, at the end of the day, walk away and know that it is in good hands.
