That’s right, there was golf this year as a sport at the Olympic Games. No matter what sport you were watching, we all watched with heads held high cheering for our country. Zika or no Zika, it didn’t stop the athletes that truly wanted to be called an Olympic athlete or the best in the world in their sport; they foremost wanted to express their pride and respect for their country and flag.
If you’re like me, it happened a couple of months age so you may need a recap: Gold – Justin Rose (GB), Silver – Henrik Stenson (SWE), Bronze – Matt Kuchar (US).
I am so proud of all the United States golfer’s who jumped at the opportunity to represent our country and flag with great pride. Playing for the U.S. were men’s players like Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson and Patrick Reed, and female players like Stacy Lewis (who came in the dreaded 4th place) and Lexi Thompson. Matt saved the day for the U.S. team shooting a 63 on the last day and enabling him to stand on the podium so proudly.
I won’t mention the golfers that publicly refused to participate because of Zika. They should be ashamed of themselves. (Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth – sorry couldn’t control the fingers.)
While many may view this as being disrespectful, nothing seems more disrespectful than refusing to stand for your national anthem. Yes, we all have our right to express our opinion and concerns. That’s why I’ll be glad to express mine. Kaepernick, you’re an idiot. As the coach and team owners, as golfers, would say, “You’ve got no balls.” I know exactly how I would handle it. Mr. Kaepernick, we have no problem with you taking a knee but when you decide to stand please keep walking to the locker room that you will never see again.
As my buddie R.J. would say, “You know some people just don’t get it.” Such a simple statement but so true.
Back to golf. For the most part golfers get it, but some don’t. They think they are better than others because they are fortunate enough to be playing while others around them may be working hard to keep the grass cut or serving you drinks. Maybe a simple thing like not cooking your hot dog just right and all they did was put the order in, yet some people feel the need to chastise them. Most golfers are not this way, but if you feel you may be one of these golfers at least tip good.
Well, all is well. Football season is here and I am so glad. I have just a quick prediction. Down goes Florida. Down goes Auburn. Go Dawgs!
P.S. Thanks Gam for your Bulldog tailgate gift. I’ll pull it out every time your confused son-in-law shows up for a game.
Till next tee time.
