"I think it’s
essential that we approach our understanding of it in a
rational way,"
the man continued. "The truth may not be staring us
in the face, it may be buried
or hidden, but certainly the wealth of human experience
over the millennia have
contributed in some fashion to our existence and our
mind/soul’s perception of
this phenomena."
"It ain’t so complicated," she answered,
"we lived very full lives, my Darlin’."
"I’m not arguing that. But we don’t live in
a vacuum. Everything we are, everything
we have learned from our lives has prepared us for the
end. And when
we are gone, what remains? Will they out there even
care?"
"Surely they must be watching us. Our parents
and those folk, they done this for
a reason. They want to save somethin’ valuable,
somethin’ they thought was being
lost in the world outside. They wanted to give us a life
that meant somethin’
more than some rat race or food fo’ they
entertainment. This place, our
city, is a monument of all the good in men and
women." He looked at her fondly.
She
was a proud woman,
he thought, she
should be. They
had survived this
long. They had proved Man’s Great Experiment a
success, even though so much
had gone wrong.
